Mother and Child Care in ArtMother and Child Care in Art
The relationship between art, motherhood and child care has always been a fertile source of discussion and debate. This book, like its predecessors Medicine and Art and Surgical and Medical Treatment in Art, evolved from a series of articles written by Alan EH Emery on art and medicine in Clinical Medicine, the Journal of the Royal College of Physicians. In this volume, however, the authors have concentrated their attention on the biological, social and emotional elements of the unique relationship between mother and child.
Each artwork, beautifully reproduced in full colour, is accompanied by an essay, tracing the history of mother and child care from Ancient Egypt to the present day. Featured artists include Rembrandt van Rijn, William Hogarth, Norman Rockwell and Alison Lapper, as well as numerous lesser known artists spanning the ages and the globe. The essays describe the relevance of each work of art and also detail the artists themselves, making this book a unique treasure trove of information for all who share in the authors' love of art, history, motherhood and child care.
Mother and Child Care in Art is the third in a series by Professor Alan Emery and Marcia Emery, authors of the highly successful Medicine and Art and Surgical and Medical Treatment in Art. This is a beautiful hardback collection of carefully selected works of art with illuminating and
enthralling commentaries. Each artwork, reproduced in full colour, is accompanied by an article tracing the history of pregnancy, birth, contraception or maternal bonds, throughout history. Touching on subjects such as paediatrics, women and health, and the role of women in medicine, this is a
touching collection of stunning works of art, from Egyptian times right up to modern day, with revealing and informative accompanying essays. This book will prove to be a beautiful addition to the collection of any art enthusiast, or anyone interested in the history and development of medicine
through the ages.
Based on a series of articles by Alan E.H. Emery in Clinical Medicine, the Journal of the Royal College of Physicians, this book considers 67 works of art relating to mothers and childcare. Emery (human genetics, U. of Edinburgh) and Monica Emery, a medical librarian, focus on works that are generally not devotional, and they mostly exclude those that depict disesases. Included are works from ancient Egypt to the present day, each work shown full-page in color and accompanied by a brief essay on its history and medical connections. Among the artists included: Rembrandt, Munch, Chagall, Goya, Norman Rockwell, Susan Macfarlane, and Alison Lapper. Other works are listed at the end of the book. US distribution is by BookMasters.
