Interesting rewriting of Othello. The new twists in the plot are welcome: you may think you know how it will end, but you nevertheless are surprised.

This is fine writing about a truly terrible thing. Chevalier has done a great job of transitioning to a young-adult audience, but all will learn something from this book. The end is shocking.

Influenced by Shakespeare's Othello, this is a modern take and an enjoyable read. Characters are well developed and the themes and plot are relevant and believable. Chevalier has even incorporated the pace of events at a similar speed as the play. The ending makes you think too! I would highly recommend it.

My motivation in reading "New Boy," is that I read anything that Tracy Chevalier writes. Her writing is very clear and clean. Not having read Othello, I don't know how closely it tracks with it. I am amazed at how much happened in the span of a day. Bullying is a concern in 2017 and this book is worth a read just to see how early in a child's life that can occur.

The time, 1974, and setting, Washington D.C., is also timely. With some comparing Nixon to Trump, tempers are high now too. See page 156.

Devastating - the ultimate of tragedies. In true Shakepearean style : love, betrayal, pain and anguish.
