"Barrie Anne Blythe and her aunt Charlotte have always known that the other residents of their small coastal community find them peculiar -- two women living alone on the outskirts of town. It is the price of concealing their strange and dangerous family secret. But two events threaten to upend their lives forever. The first is the arrival of a mysterious abandoned baby with a hint of power like their own. The second is the sudden reappearance of Barrie Anne's long-lost husband -- who is not quite the man she thought she married. Together, Barrie Anne and Charlotte must decide how far they are willing to go to protect themselves -- and the child they think of as their own -- from suspicious neighbors, the government, and even their own family..."-- Provided by publisher.

The characters and setting were very captivating. The relationships felt real and the character development was awesome. The book wasn't quite what I was expecting in terms of plot or witches, but I really enjoyed the authors writing style and the way the story unfolded over different time periods. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I enjoyed this story set in our area of the U.S. There is magic, of a kind, and mystery but the overarching emotion is love. That powerful force pervades the story and both good and bad things come of it. I would recommend to readers who enjoy an easygoing read with a bit of history, mystery, and water.

This is my first read from this author and the title caught my attention, first. It came out to be very unusual, original, engrossing story of love, family and touch of magic, somewhere in Pacific Northwest during and after WWII! Emphasis here is not on magic elements as much as on people who go through hardship to achieve that magic in their lives. Very enjoyable novel.

“Being in love is a special kind of insanity. It’s as if the mind gives way under some primal drive, a need to touch, a compulsion to possess, almost to devour.”
