The first couple of songs were a little too '60s for my taste. Once they got into more '70s-era rock, I thought the vocals lacked enough power to tip the album over into being truly great. Think Heart without Ann Wilson. Check out one of their classic albums instead.

All-woman band Ace of Cups first came on the scene in San Francisco in the late sixties, opening for The Band and earning the praise and respect of musicians like Jimi Hendrix. Albums and stardom eluded them, and with time and family, the band broke up until a few years ago when a researcher rediscovered them and they were encouraged to put out their "debut" album. It's refreshing to hear women with experience and living rocking it out, and they get help from friends like Taj Mahal and Peter Weir of the The Grateful Dead. Special kudos to the drumming and bass playing on these songs, which are strong without being overpowering, and to the songs themselves, which evoke some of the Haight-Ashbury feel without being nostalgic.
